In a not-at-all-surprising move, the Humboldt County Supervisors have once again made some mind-boggling moves when it comes to drumming up jobs and improving the plight of the workforce.
The Board’s recent appointees to the Workforce Development Board (WDB) are experts – in holding jobs that bleed off the public coffers. The newest members of Humboldt’s favorite ineffective Board are former high school principal Rick Jordan, HSU Faculty member Robert Christensen, and Jim Wood’s legislative aide, DeAnna Sisk. Man, nothing like a bunch of public sector leeches to really give our faltering economy a boost, and our workforce a leg up.
Now, in the Supervisors’ defense, State law requires certain sectors to be represented on the WDB. (Shout-out to an unnamed County Supervisor for pointing out the State requirements in an e-mail to THC – turns out that at least one of them actually can read.) Which explains why the Supes’ hands were tied in selecting people who in all likelihood have never held a serious job in the private sector ever.
However, just because the Supes had to pick someone from the public side of things doesn’t mean they had to scrape the bottom of the frickin’ barrel.
Take good ol’ Rick Jordan, for example. Wanna know what he was doing last school year? He was the principal at Eureka High School. Wanna know where he’s at now? They sent him down to the sparkling educational institution that is Zoe Barnum School in Eureka. Generally, if you’re good at your job in that field, you don’t regress from High School. Maybe people figured he’s a better fit at Zoe since he has so much experience with kids getting shot at under his watch.
(Also, it’s important to note what a fantastic positive affect Jordan had on the educational standards of EHS. Check out this rather embarrassing look into how well kids were being taught under his watch according to the standardized tests last year, as reported by LoCO.)
So, after failing to properly educate the leaders of our future, he’s now been given a chance to screw up the workers of the present, too! Good call, Rex, Mark, Virginia, Estelle, and Ryan. Good call.
As for Rob Christensen, THC doesn’t even really get what his position is. Something to do with organizing student barbecues and the Final Study Lounge. He does have a background in the social sciences – which I’m sure will be of major help to Humboldt’s economy. Right?
Last, and probably not least, is Deanna Sisk. “Not least”” is really saying something, too, since she’s a frickin’ legislative aide to Jim Wood. THC really hopes she can bring all the lessons she’s learned about efficiency and hard work from the State Assembly (HA!) and impart them to Humboldt’s troubled workers.
Thanks, Supervisors – things are really looking up with these appointments. Come see us in the welfare line once the AFSCME comes after your jobs this election cycle. (Their words, not ours!)
